An Emmy Award-winning former news anchor and investigative reporter, Dave Frankel turned his attention to law after enjoying a broadcast news career that spanned more than 25 years. While he began his legal career representing broadcasters and other creative professionals as an attorney with Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP in Philadelphia, Dave's dedication to the needs of children and their families led to the launch of Frankel & Kershenbaum in 2009. While continuing to represent members of the media, Dave spends much of his time advising his clients on special education issues, bullying, civil rights, and personal injury.
Dave’s special needs education work includes legal counseling and representation for parents, federal and state litigation, due process hearings, discipline matters and a wide range of related legal needs. His children-centered personal injury practice is designed to protect kids who suffer birth injuries, school and playground injuries, injuries caused by restraint devices, assaults, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, sexual assault and head injuries. Dave is also passionate about protecting the Constitutional rights of children when they are faced with bullying, racial, sexual, religious or other discrimination, disabilities, First Amendment violations or other civil rights infringements. Similarly, he handles civil rights matters, including harassment and discrimination, for children and adults.
Dave has served as an adjunct professor of contract drafting at Villanova University School of Law and currently sits on the Alumni Advisory Board of the Villanova Sports & Entertainment Law Journal. Not surprisingly, his passion for public service focuses on education and the needs of children: he is actively involved with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and serves as the host for Alex’s Original Lemonade Stand each June and the auctioneer for the Lemon Ball in January. Dave helped establish the Magnolia School for Autistic Children, and served on the boards of directors of Leadership Philadelphia and the Radnor Educational Foundation.
As a broadcast news professional, Dave was a well-known investigative reporter, weatherman and news anchor. He is perhaps best known as Philadelphia’s CBS-3 News Anchor and 6-ABC’s weather anchor. Dave represents broadcasters, journalists and other creative professionals in every aspect of their careers, from contract negotiation, analysis and review to performance coaching. Dave has extensive experience at every level of the television industry, from local news to the national networks, and has negotiated both personal services contracts and collective bargaining agreements. He has also defended publishers and broadcasters to protect their First Amendment right to publish and broadcast the news. As a former reporter, Dave knows how the media works - from the inside! Dave's media background and extensive contacts in newsrooms from coast to coast are invaluable to his business clients. When news reporters call them, they call Dave. Dave's unique experience as a lawyer and a former reporter give his clients the edge and insight they need when dealing with the news media. And when the courts of law and public opinion collide, Dave's there to counsel his clients and help them navigate through those two equally dangerous minefields.
Dave is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He is a 2006 cum laude graduate of Villanova University School of Law, where he was an editor of the Sports & Entertainment Law Journal. In 2010, 2011and 2012, he was recognized by Thomson Reuters, published annually in Philadelphia magazine, as a Super Lawyers® Rising Star. Dave lives in Delaware County with his wife, Marjie.
