Practice Areas: LGBT Youth / Adult Rights

LGBT Law

The fight for equal treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) families and individuals has fortunately seen much progress in recent years. Several states have legalized same-sex marriage, while many more recognize civil unions, protect domestic partnerships, prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and otherwise protect the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. The fight is far from over, however. At Frankel & Kershenbaum, we believe in equality and fairness for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identification. We understand that GLBT individuals, couples and families face unique and formidable legal and societal challenges in a variety of areas, including harassment and discrimination at work and in school; medical rights and decisions; discrimination in housing; estate planning; family formation and recognition through civil unions, domestic partnerships, cohabitation, adoption, reproductive assistance and name changes; separation and civil union/domestic partnership dissolutions and hate crimes. Whether our clients require legal information, contract drafting, advocacy or dispute resolution through trial, settlement or alternative means, we offer compassionate, skilled assistance in a welcoming environment. We proudly serve the LGBT communities of both New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Transgendered Individuals and the Law

Transgender individuals are unfortunately the least protected members of the LGBT community. Transgendered residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey often require experienced legal assistance with matters such as gender and name changes on driver’s licenses, birth certificates, social security cards, school and workplace IDs and passports. Those with non-conforming gender identities are also frequently subjected to harassment and discrimination and are presented with unique challenges when it comes to legal concerns such as estate planning and marriage recognition and dissolution. Our experienced attorneys are prepared to assist transgender clients with these and other issues as they seek equal treatment in their communities and workplaces.

LGBT Youth

While today’s young people have a greater awareness and acceptance of their gay, lesbian and bisexual peers, many children still suffer discrimination, bullying and harassment both in and outside of school. Sadly, many LGBT youth feel isolated and alone, particularly where schools do not permit GLBT student groups or recognize the discrimination these children suffer. As attorneys focused on educational and youth matters, Dave Frankel and Josh Kershenbaum are frequently called upon to protect the rights of young LGBT clients.
